Fort Valley Police Investigate Weekend Shooting, Suspect Arrested in Florida

FORT VALLEY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Fort Valley Police Department needs your help to in the investigation of a shooting that happened over the weekend.

Chief Lawrence Spurgeon say police were called out to a home off Anderson Avenue Saturday night around 9:30 to investigate a shooting. When they arrived, officers found 27-year-old Dandra McKay had been shot. She was taken to the hospital and listed in critical condition.

Officers obtained warrants for the suspect, 26-year-old Brandon Strickland of Newnan, Georgia. He was later arrested in Gainesville, Florida on drug trafficking charges and booked into the Alachua County Jail. FVPD is waiting to talk to him.

“We have not had the opportunity to interview the suspect yet,” Spurgeon said. “As soon as we get an opportunity to talk to him, we’ll know better exactly what his motive was for the shooting.”

Spurgeon says investigators aren’t sure if this was a domestic dispute, but say the victim and the suspect have a child together.

Investigators from both FVPD and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation were called out to assist in the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call FVPD at 478-825-3384.
