FORT VALLEY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Students in Peach County had an exciting start to the school year on Tuesday. The atmosphere at Fort Valley Middle School was lively, with cheers, balloons and decorations welcoming the students on their special day.
Principal Kizzy Johnson says she’s committed to setting high expectations from day one while also ensuring the students feel loved and, most importantly, safe during the next 180 days of school.
“You can’t learn if you feel unsafe,” she said. “So we do a lot of drills. We do things. We taught the kids about what to do. If we see an intruder, we talk to people about relationships. If you get into an argument with someone, because kids have to feel safe in their environment. If they don’t, they’re not going to learn.”
The school’s motto for the year is “Learning is Required.” While test scores hold significance, Johnson says success can be measured in various ways beyond just academics.
Wednesday, students in Houston County will head back to the classroom. Bibb County students return on Monday.
