Fort Hawkins Officials Break Ground for Visitor’s Center
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A project hat took years in the making broke ground Thursday at Fort Hawkins.
A large crowd gathered in front of the fort to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Fort Hawkins Visitor’s Center. The log cabin building will be the new home to artifacts, memorabilia, and a theatre that shows a film on the fort’s history. There will also be a trail that connects the visitor center to the fort.
Officials say it’s been more than 15 years in the making, but now they’ll finally have a place to celebrate the birthplace of Macon.
“We’re one of the few cities that can point to a piece of dirt and say this is where the City of Macon started. The historical significance is just that,” Mike Cranford, the Chairman of the Fort Hawkins Commission said. “Everybody wants to know where the birthplace is and this is the birthplace for the City of Macon.”
The project is paid for using penny tax dollars. Construction is set to begin in August and officials hope to have it open by the first of next year.
