Fort Hawkins celebrates Georgia Day
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Historic Fort Hawkins celebrated Georgia Day with a ceremonial camp fire and a history lesson.
On February 12th during the 18th Century, General James Oglethorpe founded the colony of Georgia.
Program Director for Fort Hawkins Marty Willett says, though Fort Hawkins wasn’t a colonial fort, it still plays its part in Georgia History.
“In 1739, the founder of Georgia colony, General James Oglethorpe, camped out on the Old Fields on his way to the Chattahoochee River,” says Willett.
Fort Hawkins is the highest hill of the Sacred Old Fields and Willett says he believes that’s where Gen. Oglethorpe camped.
