Forsyth to ring in new year with Forsythia Ball Drop
Preparations are underway in Forsyth to welcome in the new year with the Forsythia Ball Drop.
FORSYTH, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Cities across the world are getting ready to ring in the new year, and Middle Georgia is no exception for celebrations.
2024 is just around the corner, and preparations are underway in Forsyth to welcome in the new year with the Forsythia Ball Drop.
According to Main Street Director, TaKeimia Childs, the ball drop has been a tradition for the city since 2016.
“Well, the ball drop started when our current mayor right now, Eric Wilson, became mayor,” Childs said. “He wanted to have something for downtown Forsyth to be able to do here on New Year’s versus having to travel out of town.”
The Forsythia Ball is covered with lights, and of course, yellow Forsythia flowers, to represent the city.
“It just symbolizes the unity, and the ball just bring everyone together here locally to celebrate the new year together,” Childs said.
2023 was a big year for the city as it celebrated the 200th anniversary of its founding.
As the final celebration of the year, the Forsythia Ball Drop will include a block party in Courthouse Square featuring music, games, food trucks and more.
And once the countdown to the new year begins and the midnight hour draws near…
“We take this ball here and our firetruck will take it up on the ladder, and we’ll drop it down at midnight. Our mayor will do a countdown and he will drop it at midnight, and Happy New Year!” Childs said.
As the city looks ahead to 2024, Childs says there’s more fun in the works.
From movie nights in the park to a summer concert series and fall festival, there will be plenty of opportunities for the community to come together.
“Come out and enjoy your city,” she said. “Enjoy your family and friends and your city. You don’t have to travel far just to come out and enjoy yourself.”
