Former Michigan coach Sherrone Moore detained after firing

Former University of Michigan head football coach Sherrone Moore remains in custody

(NBC)- Former University of Michigan head football coach Sherrone Moore remains in custody, following his sudden firing and detention by police earlier this week.

Newly released dispatch audio sheds light on a 911 call made from an Ann Arbor home Wednesday afternoon. In the recording, a dispatcher says a caller reported a man inside the house attacking her and claimed he had been stalking her for months.

Moore is not named in the audio. Police say they responded to an alleged assault around the same time and took a suspect into custody, but they have not released further details. Authorities have also not confirmed whether the incident described in the dispatch audio is connected to Moore’s detention.

Roughly 30 minutes later, the university’s athletic director publicly announced Moore’s firing for cause. In a statement, the athletic department said an internal investigation found credible evidence that Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

Moore has not responded to requests for comment from NBC News.

The 39-year-old, a married father of three, was named Michigan’s head coach just two seasons ago, following the team’s national championship run. His tenure was at times overshadowed by the fallout from a 2023 sign-stealing scandal that resulted in a two-game suspension.

The abrupt coaching change has sent shockwaves through the campus of one of college football’s most prominent programs, leaving students and fans stunned by the rapid developments.

The investigation remains ongoing.
