ATLANTA, Georgia – (41NBC/WMGT) – Former Houston County Baseball Star Drew Burress has made quite a name for himself in the early part of the 2024 NCAA baseball season with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Burress commited to Georgia tech, just like many former Bears commit to Division-1 NCAA schools, even when he knew he could be drafted into Major League Baseball.
The Freshman Outfielder has even more national recognition now, for something he’s been doing in Houston county for years.

“Doesn’t matter if I’m a Freshman and they are 23 or 24 years old, I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I know how to hit, and I go out there expecting to get my ‘A-swing’ off, and hit a ball hard or hit a ball out of the park, every at-bat” said Burress.

So far this season, the HoCo graduate is batting a .375 average, with 21 runs, 24 hits. 10 home runs, and 27 RBI’s.

Not to mention, in just his eighth career game at Tech, Burress had four at bats and four home runs against Georgia Southern, which was a new Georgia Tech program record.

However, the former Bear had set backs after graduation last year.

“I felt that I was being undervalued because you see the term go around a lot, ‘undersized’ is the way they like to label me, and those big league teams, they draft a team of guys that have the potential to be the best out of high school, but they don’t draft the guys that are the best, and out of college they draft the guys that are the best” said Burress. “That kind of sums it up to me is go and continue to do what I’ve always done and hit and play the game and be the best, and I’m going to be in a better spot for it; more developed and make more money at the end of the day.”

That is exactly why he came to a winning program like Georgia Tech instead of being drafted.

Burress chose to use the unmatched yellow jackets coaching staff in Atlanta, to develop and harness his skills for the future of his career.

“Georgia Tech has a long history of developing hitters, and a lot of high picks, a lot of first rounders, and obviously, that’s the big goal” said Burress.

The freshman phenom, as the Yellow Jackets media calls him, will have his first taste of ACC play this weekend when Tech takes on 13th ranked N.C. State.
