Prepare Now for Extended Outages

Flint Energies advises its members to prepare for several days without power and to take the following steps:

  • Light: Secure flashlights and battery-powered lanterns, avoiding candles or open flames.
  • Water: Fill bathtubs or large containers for household use if you depend on a well. Stock up on drinking water and ensure your livestock or poultry have a backup generator for water access.
  • Food: Store nonperishable items like canned goods and peanut butter. Don’t forget a manual can opener!
  • Information: Keep a battery-powered radio or NOAA Weather Radio for emergency alerts. Charge your cell phone and have a car charger ready.
  • Medical Needs: Make plans for family members who rely on electricity for medical devices, including backup power or relocation.

Safety Tips for During the Outage

If power goes out, members should take these precautions:

  • Limit refrigerator and freezer door openings to preserve food.
  • Turn off large appliances and sensitive electronics to prevent damage.
  • Gradually reconnect appliances once power is restored.

Electrical Safety During Outages

To prevent accidents and injuries:

  • Use portable generators with care and isolate them from Flint Energies’ lines to avoid backfeeding electricity.
  • Stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately.
  • Avoid clearing debris near power lines, and never touch a downed line or objects in contact with one.
