First Responders Remembered At 9/11 Memorial Service

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Tuesday, marked the 12TH anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks when terrorist flew planes into the twin towers in New York and crashed planes in Virginia and Philadelphia, killing thousands of people including first responders.

Macon and Bibb County law enforcement agencies held a memorial service in downtown Macon, to honor our own first responders who died in the line duty locally. The service also honored those who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks.

“It’s an honor for us to be here,” said Macon-Bibb County Fire Chief Marvin Riggins. “This morning is a beautiful morning much like it was unfortunately 12 years ago on that infamous morning. But we’re here this morning to give our tribute and let’s never forget those who gave it all to keep us safe and out of harms way.”

The Macon and Bibb County fire chief, sheriff, and a major from the police department placed flowers at the memorial in remembrance of those who died serving their agencies. Bibb County Sheriff David Davis recalled exactly where he was the day of the 9/11 attacks.

“I was a supervisor in our correction division and I was in my office and watched it on TV unfolding,” said Sheriff Davis. “Then certainly shortly there after, because you didn’t know where the next attacks were going to come or if anything was going to happen here locally we began preparing a plan.”

Macon police Major Robert Grabowski says law enforcement officers have to be mindful at all times of their duties, to protect, serve and preserve life.

“First responders, they put their lives on the line and they do that everyday,” said Grabowski. “Once they are sworn in they come and fulfill their commitment to the citizens and the county. Your life can be taken in a minute.”
