MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – First Lady Jill Biden made a campaign stop at the Macon-Bibb County Democratic Committee headquarters in Macon Saturday to support Vice President Kamala Harris.
She was joined by local leaders, including Macon-Bibb County Mayor Pro Tempore Seth Clark and regional organizing director LJ Malone. The event highlighted the Biden administration’s impact on the community and the importance of upcoming elections.
Clark opened the rally by praising the American Rescue Plan, which provided funding to Macon for various public initiatives, crediting the benefits of Biden and Harris’ leadership.
“Macon-Bibb County is safer, it is kinder, and it is more fair because of President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris’ leadership,” he said. He also reminded the crowd of Harris’ tie-breaking vote that enabled the plan’s passage.
LJ Malone echoed this sentiment, speaking about the need for voter turnout. He observed a surge of enthusiasm among local Democratic voters, many of whom expressed a desire to “turn the page” on the current political climate.
Dr. Biden recalled her last visit to Macon in October 2020, contrasting it with the current landscape. She remembered meeting with people outside of the Tubman Museum, masked up and socially distanced during the COVID-19 pandemic. She also outlined key campaign issues, such as combating rising housing and grocery costs for the middle class, which she framed as part of a strategy to “build the economy from the middle out and the bottom up.”
She also addressed abortion rights, saying the issue goes beyond political and religious lines.
“No one has to abandon their faith and deeply held beliefs to agree that the government shouldn’t be telling women what to do,” she said.
Her visit was meant to motivate attendees to mobilize over the next few days and ensure a strong turnout for Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. “We have to work harder than we ever have before… because our democracy is on the line,” she concluded.
