First African American Sworn in as Bibb Superior Court Clerk

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The first African American to serve as Clerk of Bibb County Superior Court is sworn into office.

Erica Woodford took the oath of office from Judge M. Yvette Miller Friday morning at the Bibb County Courthouse.

Woodford, a private attorney, has said from day one of her campaign she wants to be viewed as the “People’s Clerk” and make the office more efficient and user friendly.

But she says she doesn’t expect to make drastic changes in her first few days in office.

“I’ll just observe and assess the strengths of the office and see what areas we can tweak, what areas we can improve,” says Woodford.  “There is something that we can do within the first 60 to 90 days, and that is to accept debit cards and credit cards, because right now we do not do that, and that’s an easy fix.”

Woodford tells us Macon attorney Stephanie Woods Miller will serve as her Chief Deputy Clerk.

She’s set to take office on January 1st but tells us she’s likely to be in the office the day before.

Woodford beat out Republican Linda Tillman for the position in last month’s general election.
