Firecrackers Cause Police Response at Central High School

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon police responded to what they thought was a shooting at Central High School early Thursday morning.

According to a news release from the Bibb County School District, someone set off firecrackers in the school’s cafeteria around 7:30 a.m. Several 911 calls were made initially believing it was gunfire.

Macon police say they responded and entered the building as though there was an active shooter. Officers were seen running into the school as parents dropped off students.

The school briefly went into a Code Red because of its proximity to Central and Miller Magnet Middle School went into a Cod Yellow. It was quickly determined the “shot” was a firecracker and both schools returned to Code Green within five minutes.

No one was injured. The school day returned to normal and students are in their classrooms taking their finals as planned.

David Gowan, the school district’s director of risk management, says its up to parents to be proactive and prevent something like this from happening.

“We want parents and guardians to be very diligent about being involved in their students lives and checking daily their book bags, other things they’re taking to school, to make sure they don’t have things like weapons and bullets and firecrackers, things that create a disturbance,” he said.

Administrators are investigating the incident and no further details are available at this time.
