Ficklin Says Election Results Could Be Challenged

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Henry Ficklin may have lost, but he says Macon-Bibb could be in for another election.

The former councilman did not say whether he would concede or not tonight, and he suggested gerrymandering had taken place, which is the intentional creation of voting precincts based on demographics to give a political advantage.

The Voter’s Rights Act prohibits gerrymandering districts, and the Supreme Court has also stated gerrymandering is against the law.

Ficklin is positive the election could be challenged.

“Under the Voter’s Rights Act, all of this can be challenged basically because of the gerrymandering and the way that these precincts were put together,” said Ficklin. “And all of that under Section 2 could be challenged, and I do have a letter on file with the Justice Department. Prior not to this election, but prior to the September 17th election.”

Ficklin did not say he would challenge the election, however.

For his future, he said there were many open spots as a community leader coming up that he may take a look at soon.
