(CNN)- Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara urged people to leave the scene Wednesday night as tensions rose following a federal officer-involved shooting.

“I urge anyone that is at the scene to leave immediately,” O’Hara said.

Clashes broke out between protesters and law enforcement after a federal officer shot a man in the leg. The Department of Homeland Security says the man, a Venezuelan national who is in the country illegally, fled in his vehicle during what officials called a “targeted traffic stop.” DHS says the suspect crashed into a parked car, ran from the scene on foot, and later resisted arrest.

According to DHS, two other individuals then attacked the officer using a snow shovel and a broom handle. During the struggle, the federal agent discharged his weapon.

“During the struggle, the federal agent discharged his weapon, striking one adult male,” O’Hara said.

As crowds gathered, protesters followed agents through the neighborhood. Law enforcement responded by launching pepper balls and what sounded like flash bangs.

Smoke filled the air as officers deployed tear gas canisters. At least one person in the crowd was seen throwing a canister back toward officers.

Despite continued demands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement to leave the city, local officials are calling for calm. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey urged residents to remain peaceful.
