Family Seeks Answers After Ice Operation Ends In Fatal Houston Shooti

(NBC)- The family of a Houston man shot and killed during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation is calling for an independent investigation into the incident.

The Department of Homeland Security said 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado, who officials said was in the United States illegally from Mexico, was the target of an enforcement operation when he allegedly attempted to evade arrest.

Surveillance video released after the shooting appears to show Salgado’s white van being followed by a dark SUV before the encounter.

According to DHS, Salgado later used his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE officer, prompting the officer to fire in self-defense.

Salgado’s sons dispute that account, saying they do not believe their father intentionally tried to strike an officer.

They believe Salgado may have thought he was being followed by criminals because the vehicles involved were not clearly identifiable as law enforcement.

The shooting comes as the Trump administration continues to increase immigration enforcement nationwide. Border czar Tom Homan said ICE has made record numbers of arrests in recent days and indicated those enforcement efforts will continue to expand.

Salgado’s family is now urging authorities to conduct an independent investigation into the fatal shooting.
