Experts at Piedmont Macon say holidays can be harder while grieving

The holiday season is often filled with joy and togetherness, but for many people, it can also bring an intensified sense of loss.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Franchetta Trawick, a grief counselor and thanatologist with Piedmont Macon, explained that a thanatologist is a professional who specializes in the study of death, dying, and grief, helping individuals navigate loss in healthy ways.

Trawick says grief can feel heavier during the holidays because traditions, family gatherings, and memories often highlight who is missing. She encourages people to prepare for sudden waves of emotion by giving themselves grace, acknowledging their feelings, and creating new traditions if old ones feel too painful.

She also emphasized that it is okay to say “no” to holiday events. Setting boundaries, she says, is a healthy part of the grieving process and allows individuals to protect their emotional well-being.

Piedmont Macon offers ongoing grief support services for those coping with loss. Their facilitated grief support groups provide a safe space for people to share, listen, and heal alongside others experiencing similar emotions.

The 2026 Evening Grief Support Group will meet from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month, with dates adjusted in November and December due to the holidays. Afternoon group meeting times will remain unchanged.

For more information about grief support services, Piedmont Macon encourages community members to reach out and take advantage of the resources available.
