Equal Opportunity Law Passed By Macon Council Committee

MACON, Georgia (WMGT/41NBC) – The city of Macon took a major step towards equal opportunity employment Monday afternoon.

The appropriations committee approved changes to the city code.

The law-change will make sure Macon provides equal opportunity employment for minorities and women, and will use pools of data to verify hiring efforts.

Councilman Louis Tompkins spear-headed the law, and says it’s long over due.

“The process is going to be one hopefully that is all inclusive and it’s going to be a lot of work and anything worth doing requires a lot of work. But once we get it in place it will be in place, it will be law,” said Tompkins.

Tompkins said the law is timely because, he hopes the city will include local workers in the projects generated by the recently passed SPLOST.

The city’s law department looked at similar legislation from Atlanta and Tampa to adopt this change.
