Eight inmates released from Bibb County Jail under justice reform initiative

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office says eight of the expected 150 inmates have been released under Mayor Lester Miller’s justice reform initiative.

The initiative, announced last month in June, included an audit intended to assess inmate charges, the length of their stay, service needs and eligibility for new rehabilitation programs.

However, the progress has been slower than anticipated. The eight individuals who have been released are facing various charges, including criminal trespass, aggravated cruelty to animals and burglary.

Here is a list of some of the charges the inmates are facing:

  • Burglary – 1st degree (Felony)
  • Aggravated cruelty to animals
  • Criminal trespass
  • Theft by shoplifting (Misdemeanor)
  • Bond surrender
  • Theft by taking (Felont)
  • Purchase, possess or have control of controlled substance in Schedule I or narcotic
  • Entering automobile or other motor vehicle with intent to commit theft
