Eco-Friendly Christmas Trees

We’re settling an old debate, which is greener, a real or a fake Christmas tree. In this week’s Going Green, Saving Green 41 NBC Brittany Gonzalez finds out.

Sandy Creek Christmas Tree Farm owner, Donald Watson, says cutting down real trees is actually better for the environment.

“It’s really good, because the younger trees produce more oxygen,” says Watson.

According to Watson, 1 tree gives off enough daily oxygen for 18 people. Plus,
every tree that goes home with a family gets replaced.

“We probably plant 3 or maybe 4 for everyone that we cut down,” says Watson.

The trees are all natural. There’s no arsenic or lead.

Watson says, “None of these were made from OPEC oil in Chinese factory. All of them are 100% American.”

Donna Harrell says she loves live Christmas trees more than the artificial kind. “I enjoy the smell, and it just feels homey to me,” says Harrell.

Since the trees are locally green there’s no fuel emissions from transporting them either.

Watson says, “The reason artificial trees are so expensive now compared to a few years ago is the oil prices have gone up and of course that’s what they are made from.”

Of course the trees are completely recyclable. Harrell says she uses the trees for compost.

“They can go into mulch or in a lot of cases local people that are fishing in Sinclair or their own ponds will ask for some of the trees to put as structure for their fish to hide in,” says Watson.

Sandy Creek Christmas Tree Farm is located on Hammock Road in Macon. They are open everyday until Christmas from 10 am until dark.

Prices of trees start at $100 and go up to $125.
