Eating Organic on a Budget

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Most people think going organic takes a lot of time and money, but Yvonne Mourfield says that’s not always the case.

Mourfield owns Yvonne’s Natural Market on Forsyth Road. She says if you want to go green, buying organic groceries is a great place to start.

“Going green in the world now means not messing up the ecosystem of the world. We have an ecosystem inside our gut and that’s what we’re trying to teach people,” Mourfield said.

With more brands and a larger selection buying organic is easier now than ever before.

“We have cleansers, we have substitutes for bleach and we have citrus cleaners that clean anything,” Mourfield says.

But what if going entirely organic is not in your budget? Well, Mourfield says eating local and buying organic fruits and vegetables are a good place to start. While, organic meats can be a little pricey. Prices for organic fruits and vegetables are often lower than the average supermarket.

“Carrots and salads and cauliflower and all those things you can cut up and put in a little baggie and take in your lunchbox, kids love it,” Mourfield explains.

She says one of the biggest savings may come in health care costs years down the line. Mourfield explains that going organic is about stopping sickness before it ever starts.

“Kids feel fuller and better,” Mourfield says. “I just think your money goes a long way.”
