MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Cleanup is underway on Center Street in East Macon.

As 41NBC’s Fiona King reported on Monday, residents were raising concerns about illegal dumping in the area.

Macon-Bibb’s Solid Waste Department started the cleanup Tuesday at the top of the street near Williams Street East and plans to clean up the section between there and Mitchell Street where the illegal dumping has been happening.

“The final analysis stops with those individuals who so choose to illegally dump, and we’re making an honest plea to them to ask them to stop doing that,” District 3 Commissioner-Elect Stanley Stewart said. “We have convenience centers. Here in the city of Macon, we have three convenience centers, so please use those and not dirty up the neighborhood, where people have to come through here. Kids have to walk through here, older people walk through here, going to the store. We applaud Solid Waste Department of the city for what they’re doing, but at the same time, we got to make sure that we solve this problem going through.”

Stewart says this is a long-term problem, and some of the solutions on the table include blocking the street, cameras, more patrols and cutting back the bushes. If you are caught illegally dumping, you will face a fine and possible jail time.

Macon-Bibb’s three convenience centers are located at on 11th Street near the entrance of the closed landfill, 4214 Fulton Mill Road behind the Animal Welfare Center and at 1520 Ninadel Dr. Click here for more information.
