MACON, Georgia (41NBC/ WMGT) – Early voting is underway in Macon-Bibb County for the renewal of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).

The ballot measure asks whether a one percent sales and use tax should be imposed in Macon-Bibb County for numerous capital outlay projects.

Thomas Gillon, Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections Supervisor, is hopeful that more residents will participate in this year’s SPLOST election compared to the 10% of registered voters who turned out in 2021. Gillon says lack of awareness about the SPLOST, as well as voter fatigue following election years, contributes to low SPLOST election turnout.

“We did have more than our fair share of elections last year, and people may have gotten tired of it, but it’s just a very short procedure here,” Gillon said. “You’ll be in and out in five minutes tops, so it won’t take you long to come out and vote.”

Early voting continues Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through March 14 at the Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections and the Elaine H. Lucas Senior Center. Both locations will have Saturday early voting on March 1 and March 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections will have Sunday early voting on March 2 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Election Day is March 18.
