MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Early voting started Monday for the upcoming runoff elections scheduled for next Tuesday in Macon-Bibb County.

The elections in May experienced some mishaps. In light of these challenges, the Board of Elections has been working diligently to address and resolve the issues ahead of early voting and election day.

One of the major concerns involved confusion surrounding district lines, causing difficulties for some voters across Macon-Bibb County.

“There’s still things that need to be done,” Elections Supervisor Tom Gillon said. “Because some of the cyber issues the county has been facing, we didn’t have the access to fix everything as quickly as we wanted to do between the May election and the upcoming runoff.”

Karen Evans, the chairwoman for the Board of Elections, says measures have been implemented to rectify the issue.

“We’ve put maps at the precincts,” she said. “We’re encouraging all citizens to call ahead to make sure that they are supposed to vote in the runoff because the runoffs generally have a lower turnout. That’s why we’re really trying to educate the public that there are runoffs, and those people can go ahead and early vote.”

Out of the 31 precincts, only 22 will be involved in Tuesday’s runoff election. Gillon says all necessary arrangements would be completed prior to the November elections.

Eddie White, the co-owner of Helping Others Foundation, says it’s important to spread awareness about elections. “We try to encourage them to do that because we know what it took in order to get the right to vote. Again, you see me standing here sweating again. It’s a sacrifice. Worth it.”

For those interested in early voting in Macon-Bibb, two locations are available: the Elaine Lucas Senior Center in Carolyn Crayon Park and the Board of Elections at the Macon Mall, will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday this week.

Voters are urged to reach out to the Board of Elections with any queries or concerns. Additionally, the “My Voter Page” resource is available to provide assistance.
