Dublin animal shelter overcrowded, adoption or euthanization only options

DUBLIN, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – There are too many animals housed at the Dublin Laurens County animal shelter that officials say they have very few options, either the animals are immediately adopted or they have to be “put down.”

Lisa Ellis is the Interim Director of the Dublin Laurens County animal shelter, located at 618 Firetower Road. Ellis says the problem just recently got out of hand within the last two weeks.

There are currently 150 dogs and 70 cats at the shelter, which is accustom to housing 100 dogs and 50 cats.

The kennels which use to house two dogs now has three and sometimes four dogs cramped inside the cages.

Ellis says she had to euthanize a dog on Monday. The shelter workers determine which dogs are euthanized by the dogs behavior. If a dog is aggressive it is more likely to be “put down.”

“She likes to eat other dogs, so she grabbed one through the fence ripped its nose off,” said Ellis. “So, it was a decision I didn’t want to have to make but it was one that had to be made.”

Ellis is hoping more people would adopt animals from the shelter. The shelter is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12 noon until 6 p.m. The shelter is open on Thursday from 12 noon until 5 p.m., and on Saturday from 11 a.m., until 2 p.m.
