Driver Hits Fire Hydrant, Major Flooding on Macon Streets

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A pool of water flooded the streets after a driver accidentally rammed into the fire hydrant off Harvard Avenue and Columbus Road in Macon.

No one was injured, but what’s left is a big mess. According to officers, the flood will lead to a major problem during this winter freeze.

According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Captain Eric Walker, the driver of the vehicle hit the black ice causing him to loose control of the car.

“Now we’ll have to close the roadways down until the water authority can check to see what kind of damage the roadway has been done under the street,” says Walker.

With excess water flowing onto the streets, the risk of more car accidents has increased. So, they plan to work with Macon-Bibb County Public Works to keep the roadways safe.

“Roads that are icy…we’ve got sand and gravel trucks that are out. It’s just so much area covered with snow and iced over that they’re keeping the trucks constantly running,” says Walker.

The impact of the driver’s hit also caused a 20-foot washout. This means, the dirt 20-feet below the street is no longer able to hold the asphalt up, because it washed away during the flooding.

The Macon Water Authority cleaned up as much as possible today, but plans to finish the job are in works later this week.

No set clean-up day or time has been issued.
