Dozens of young men attend “I Am King” boys camp
The camp, which also honored the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr., was geared toward children between grades 6 through 12.
“Today’s camp is about empowering our youth and young men,” said camp director Jacquez J. Harris. “To identify the king within them, to grasp the concept of what it is really to be a man in today’s society.”
Demonstrations given ranged on subjects such as general etiquette, how to say grace, how to properly respect men and women in uniform, and even a lesson on how to correctly wear a necktie.
“Teaching them the basic life skills of being a male,” Harris continued.
Harris believes that holding the camp on the day to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. was a an excellent way to show the young men what the civil rights leader was all about, “Dr. King had a really big dream, and we want to live out that dream. We want to empower men to reach their full potential.”
Camp organizers have already begun registration for next year.
