Downtown Stakeholders Get Update on Second Street Corridor Project

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Monday, Macon citizens got the first of three chances this week to offer input on the Second Street Downtown Corridor Project.

Downtown stakeholders packed the conference room Monday afternoon at Terminal Station for an update on the project.

Different design drafts, which were all part of a three-day design charette done back in September by CHA & Huntley Partners, were shown to the group at the meeting.

The floor was open for questions and input about the project, which could add streetcars, green space, sidewalks and biking lanes to the street all the way from Eisenhower Parkway to Gray Highway.

“Most of the questions that they asked were, ‘When can we get started?'” says Mayor Robert Reichert.  “And then (there was) a lot of discussion about the different alternatives of how to connect Second Street with Little Richard Penniman and make this connector.”

The mayor says the input process is likely to be done within the next 60 to 90 days before a final design is presented for a vote by city council.

Monday’s presentation was the first of three this week.

Tuesday night, residents from Tindall Heights, College Hill and Beals Hill neighborhoods can go to the Buck Melton Center from 6-8, and Thursday, East Macon, Coliseum and Centreplex neighborhoods can meet at the Middle Georgia Regional Commission Office from 6-8.
