Downtown Crime on the Decline
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)– Overall crime in downtown Macon is decreasing. Bibb County Sheriff David Davis says blighted abandoned areas, homelessness, and shootings at local bars have led to a bad reputation of safety in downtown Macon. Wednesday morning the Macon-Bibb Convention and Visitors Center hosted a meeting with downtown Macon business leaders. Bibb County Sheriff David Davis presented a series of maps that showed crime in the county. The map showed how crime is not prevalent downtown.
Sheriff Davis’s goal was to show how safe the area was for business owners. “What we were trying to show is over the last 10 years there’s been a downward trend in all types of crime” Davis said.
Allan Goldman, owner of Alvin’s Pawn Shop, was please with the crime level around his shop. “Never had a a business problem downtown now its better than its ever been because of the new lofts its so much excitement downtown.” Goldman said.
