Douglass Theatre Opens Exhibit In Celebration Of Kwanzaa

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Douglass Theatre in Macon is debuting a new exhibit from local artist Charvis Harell entitled “Zora, Langston, and Bessie: A Night at the Douglass.”

The exhibit is a tribute to the summer of 1927, when three iconic Black figures of the Black Arts Movement came together at the Douglass Theatre.

The paintings are meant to connect people with the impact and influence of three Black iconic figures, which fits the meaning of day three of Kwanzaa perfectly.

“The pieces tell a story of Black history and Black culture especially in the South,” Jeff Bruce, historian and retired curator of Tubman Museum, said.

The exhibit is inspired by the book “Zora and Langston: A Story of Friendship and Betrayal.”

Shelton Land, the Executive Director of the Douglass Theatre, says having the exhibit on display at the Douglass Theatre is making space for artists to share their creativity.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. It opened today and continues through January 29.
