‘In The Door’ allows young adults to get education and job training needed for future careers
HAWKINSVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – There’s a new and free program geared towards helping young adults become successful. The program is for those who didn’t graduate high school or work low-income jobs.
Coordinator of “In The Door” says their mission is to serve those 16 to 24 year-olds in Crawford, Pulaski, Putnam, Twiggs and Wilkinson counties.
By assisting students in education and job training, staff members say people will be walking “in the door” to success.
“I was working at a plant called Perdue and that’s all I was doing,” 22-year old Aneshia Brown said.
She adds, working in a factory wasn’t fulfilling or paying the bills. She wants to one day help others. But since signing up for “In The Door,” “I am now about to better my life by obtaining my GED. While I’m obtaining my GED, I’m going to be in college classes as well, and it’s just going to help me get closer to becoming an RN,” Brown said.
Coordinator Teresa Tripp says the main goal is to encourage people like brown to get back into school.
“They get discouraged and choose to drop out of school because they don’t necessarily have the support that’s possibly needed in the home,” Tripp said.
Then the program assists them with high-in-demand job training.
According to Tripp they offer: “Nursing, education, I.T fields, avionics, air-conditioning technology, welding, and CDL.”
With businesses like Amazon coming to Middle Georgia, “In The Door” Assistant State -Wide Director Paul Allen says we need to train people in nearby counties for those kinds of jobs, too.
“We don’t want to have the talent in rural Georgia leave the area. We want to try and attract them to jobs and education to have them stay where they are,” he said.
Tripp says if you have a dream, but need help achieving it:
“The next step will be to come ‘in the door’ and let us guide them along the way.”
Tripp says they travel to the five counties once a week. She says they make themselves available because they know transportation is a challenge.
