Dogs Euthanized At Macon-Bibb Animal Shelter

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Macon-Bibb Animal shelter remains under quarantine,
after an animal tested positive for parvo.
Fourteen dogs have been euthanized in order to stop the disease from spreading at the facility.

The parvo scare started Saturday, when a puppy showed signs of having the highly infectous viral disease.

Sarah Tenon, the director of animal welfare for Macon-Bibb County, says they divided the animal shelter to prevent the disease from spreading.

“Right now we feel pretty positive that there will be no signs of parvo,” said  We still have animals that are in the infected area so that’s why we have the fourteen day quarantine.”

Tenon says the official quarantine began Thursday. However, prior to that, the shelter initiated a quarantine status after learning about the infected puppy, on Saturday.

Fourteen dogs began to show signs of having parvo, such as vomiting and diarrea. They had either been exposed or tested positive.

“Those dogs now have been euthanized in order to contain the spread of that virus,” said Tenon.

Kristal Mahoganey, an animal shelter attendant, is keeping a watchful eye on seventythree dogs and thirteen cats at the facility. She is also helping to make sure the shelter remains clean.

“We’ve been disinfecting everyday, all of the cages that could have been a possible cause of pravo and just disinfecting and really cleaning behind the dogs that we do have, that are actually healthy,” said Mahoganey.

Tenon says some of the older dogs probably will not show signs of parvo, but she added, other dogs were treated just in case.

“We re-vaccinated them with a straight parvo vaccination,” she said.

A couple of the dogs have had puppies since being in the shelter. They nor their puppies have shown any signs of being infected with parvo.
