Doctors say respiratory viruses rising in Macon during holiday season
Doctors say crowded holiday gatherings can make it easier for illnesses to spread across communities.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Respiratory viruses are on the rise this holiday season, and doctors say crowded gatherings can make it easier for illnesses to spread.
Doctors at Atrium Health Navicent Primary Care West Macon say they have seen an increase in patients experiencing respiratory symptoms. Those symptoms include sneezing, headaches, sore throats, fevers, and body aches.
With more people gathering to celebrate with friends and family, physicians say viruses can spread quickly in group settings.
“This is the time of year where we are all getting together, and it’s so easy to pass things on because we want to see our friends and families,” said Dr. Leslie David, primary care residency director for the family medicine residency program. “Unfortunately, all it takes is one person in a group setting and then it can spread very quickly.”
Doctors say flu season runs through May and stress that it is not too late to get vaccinated.
Health experts also say taking precautions like vaccinations and good handwashing can help prevent the spread of illnesses and keep communities safe throughout the sick season.
