Disc Golf Takes Flight at Macon Junior Olympics

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) –Ditching the fairways for frisbees, disc golf is continuing to take flight in Middle Georgia. This weekend Macon’s Junior Olympics offered a smaller set of hands an opportunity to grasp on to the new sport.

In the midst of the Macon Riverside Optimist Club’s competitions, the game soared with the kids. After a few smooth drives, 10-year-old Jailynn Smith was aiming to be one of the best golfers of the bunch.

“Because it was really and I’m really good at throwing,” Smith said.

Michelle Jones with the Optimist Club helped teach the smaller athletes the fundamentals of throwing a Frisbee on Saturday.

“It’s just another way to get the kids outside and having fun and doing a sport that doesn’t cost a lot,” Jones said.

After a long day of races and relays, the medals were handed out. For Smith, learning a new sport, was the real award by a long shot.

“It was really about winning,” Smith said, “it was about having fun and being there.”
