Diabetic Driver Faces New Challenge At Indy 500

INDIANAPOLIS – Rookie Charlie Kimball is facing the biggest challenge of his racing career Sunday.

The Indianapolis 500 will be the longest race of his career, and it’s likely to come in unseasonably warm temperatures.

It would be tough for anyone. But it could be particularly difficult for the first diabetic driver officials have knowingly allowed to race in the 500.

Kimball will take precautions. He will have a blood-glucose monitor attached to his steering wheel, and he will have two bottles mounted inside his car. One will contain regular water; the other will contain a mixture that will he use if his blood-sugar levels change too much.
