Democrat David Davis Runs Unopposed in Bibb County Sheriff Race

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The race for Bibb County’s top cop is down to one man.

Republican nominee Shawn Fritz dropped out of the sheriff’s race on Wednesday. Current Chief Deputy David Davis will run for Bibb County Sheriff unopposed in November.

“Certainly this is a good turn of events for my campaign,” Davis said.

Davis says he didn’t even know his opponent dropped out of the race until he heard it through the grapevine.

“It was very encouraging, very grateful for this turn of events,” Davis said. “We were willing to move forward in the campaign, willing to put out our platform and our vision.”

In a news release, Fritz says he’s leaving the race due to health concerns and an increased workload as a defense contractor for Robins Air Force Base.

41 NBC reached out to Fritz but was told he was unavailable. Earlier this year he said if elected one of his top priorities would be to make sure the men and women who protect the county have the tools they need to do their jobs effectively.

“That can be anything from a bullet proof vest to training courses, including raises,” Fritz told 41 NBC on May 25, 2012. “I understand it’s been a long time since they got a significant raise that would be something I would work on.”

Even though Davis is the last man standing, he says he still has a lot of work ahead of him. He will continue to campaign, stay active in the community and work to make a better Bibb County.

“I sorta know where we’re going, I know what path we want to take and I’m looking forward to it,” Davis said.

Calls and emails keep pouring in as supporters congratulate him. Davis is excited to take office next January and hopes for the best for his former opponent.
