Deadly shooting at Kentucky State University sparks lockdown and shock on campus

(NBC)- Chaos unfolded at Kentucky State University Monday afternoon after a deadly shooting inside a campus dorm left one person dead and another critically injured.

Frankfort Police say the gunfire erupted just after 3 p.m. in a residence hall located in the center of the 1,000-acre campus, home to more than 2,200 students.

Emergency radio traffic captured the tense moments as officers rushed in, reporting an “active shooter at the Young Building” and later saying the suspect had been detained.

One student, Anthony Jones, says the gunfire came without warning.
“I just heard two shots… I looked out the window and everybody was running,” he said. “I ran down as soon as it was happening.”

Authorities — including campus police and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office — secured the building and placed the campus on lockdown as they moved students to safety. A suspect was taken into custody shortly after.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said the shooting does not appear to be random.
“This was not a mass shooting or random incident based on what I’ve been told,” the governor said, adding that the suspected shooter “is already in custody.”

With final exams underway, many students say the violence shattered what should have been a routine week.
“Regular college students just kicking it and studying… we ain’t thinking nothing going on — and then boom, it happened,” one student said. “It’s crazy. I can’t believe it happened on a college campus.”

Police have not released the names of the victims or the suspect, and the investigation is ongoing.
