De Silvestro Not Cleared To Drive After Indy Practice Crash
INDIANAPOLIS – Simona de Silvestro is waiting for medical clearance to get back on the track after crashing during Thursday’s practice for the Indianapolis 500.
The 22-year-old Swiss driver lost control of her car, and it flipped several times, burst into flames and slid down the track upside down. De Silvestro was diagnosed with second-degree burns on her right hand and superficial burns on her left hand.
The injuries have left her status for the May 29 race in doubt. With qualifying scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, HVM Racing Keith Wiggins says it’s possible the team could sign a replacement driver.
The team canceled a news conference with de Silvestro that had been scheduled for Friday morning.
