Crochet club making shawls for cancer patients
Row after row, stitch after stitch, the ladies of Tickled Pink Stitchers are crocheting chains of love.
“I’m working on a yellow shawl here,” cancer survivor Audrey Griffin said. “It just goes around your shoulders. It will have two pockets to keep your hands warm.”
A cozy comfort for cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy.
“When you have those nasty chemicals flowing into your body, you get cold,” Griffin said.
Griffin is a two-time cancer survivor. She knows how meaningful these shawls can be.
“The cancer center will give you a warm blanket, but we thought something handmade and with those people in mind, would be much more meaningful and not only warm their bodies but warm their hearts,” she said.
“It gives them something that they know is homemade,” Susan Smith with Tickled Pink Stitchers said. “They know that it is a wonderful thing that someone has given their time to do this.”
Time these crafters are all to willing to spend.
“Everybody does it just out of the goodness of their heart,” Griffin said.
Not everyone at the table is a cancer survivor, but they’ve all been touched by the big C in some way.
“My mom went through it and I took care of her,” Smith said.
“My family has been decimated by cancer,” Sharon Aikens with Tickled Pink Stitchers said.
And now they hope to bring joy to others with every loop and stitch.
“They’re made with love and the people care about them,” Aikens said.
So far, Tickled Pink Stitchers has given away several shawls and blankets. The ladies meet every Monday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Color Me Pink located at 115 Marge Drive in Warner Robins. They invite anyone who likes to crochet to come.
