Crew Saved On Chinese Vessel Afire Off Antarctica
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) – Chilean authorities say around 90 crew members have been rescued from a burning Chinese factory fishing ship just off the coast of Antarctica. They were taken from the burning Kai Xin by the crew of the Norwegian ship Juvel on Wednesday morning.
Officials say the Chinese vessel is 34 miles (55 kilometers) from Chile’s Bernardo O’Higgins research base near the tip of the Antarctic peninsula. Chile’s military says it’s ready to intervene if necessary to prevent an environmental disaster.
