Council Approves Road Repairs, Some Residents Unhappy

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon City Council approved to appropriate $1.5 million in SPLOST funds to Log Cabin Drive improvements.

The money would be used to install sidewalks, improve storm drainage and repair the bridge on Rocky Creek. But some residents feel like elected officials are avoiding the root of the problem.

Merritt Johnson has been pushing for changes in his community for nearly 40 years. He says the narrow lanes, high traffic and lack of sidewalks makes Log Cabin Road a danger zone. Johnson wants the roads repaved and widened before the new improvements begin.

“To spend $80,000 to $90,000 on sidewalks when we need to improve the entire road would be a waste of money,” Johnson said.

Macon City Council President James Timley says he understands the residents frustrations.

“It’s a step in the right direction, a very minute step and it should have been a much more expensive project,” Timley said.

Council Member Louis Tomkins has been pushing for this ordinance. He said he looks forward to the new improvements and making safer and more accessible roadways.

No word on when the project will begin.
