Convicted Murderer Granted Stay in Death Sentence

ATLANTA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The State Board of Pardons and Paroles issued a stay not to exceed 90 days in the murder case of Daniel Greene, who was scheduled to die by lethal injection on Thursday.  This comes after the board reviewed a clemency request from attorneys representing Greene. 

The purpose of the stay is to allow more time to examine the substance of claims offered by Greene’s representatives at Tuesday’s clemency appointment along with any additional  information that becomes available. 

The Board may lift the stay at any time and grant clemency, changing the death sentence to life or life without parole or deny clemency.

Greene was sentenced to death for malice murder for the stabbing death of Bernard Walker in September 1991. Walker was killed during a Taylor County convenience store robbery. A clerk at the store was stabbed but survived. Greene was also convicted of armed robbery and aggravated assault during the December 1992 trial.
