Construction of new Macon-Bibb Senior Citizens Center up for vote

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Macon-Bibb Operations Finance Committee votes Tuesday on a new $2.2 million Senior Citizens Center.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Barbara Palmer said. “I’ll believe it when I see it.”

To some folks at the current Macon-Bibb Senior Citizens Center, it’s not quite time to celebrate. After years of commission meeting, location changes and funding problems, a construction contract is finally being voted on.

If approved, Warren Associates, Inc. will build the new center in Central City Park. It would be complete in about nine months. The SPLOST is paying for more than $1.5 million, and the selling of the current Senior Citizens Center pays for the rest.

“They’re gonna have a sewing room, dance room, social gathering place – it’s gonna give you some flexibility which is important for seniors,” Reggie Moore, Director of Parks & Recreation said.

For almost ten years, some people that call the current center on Adams Street home have been wanting a new one.

“The ventilation is terrible…the carpet needs to be repaired, the floor and refrigeration things,” Palmer said.

If the new construction agreement is approved by the Operations and Finance Committee, then it would be voted on by the full commission.
