Connect 2 Compete Expands Services for Internet, Low-Cost Computers

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — It started as a test run. Hand-picked schools from several cities and counties across the country launched Connect 2 Compete last fall, and Bibb County was one of them.

“We just knocked it out of the ball park, Bibb was by far the top performer in the country,” said Mary Robinson, Project Coordinator, Connect 2 Compete.

It was launched in 21 Bibb schools offering affordable refurbished computers, and Internet access for $9.95 a month to families in the free lunch program. It’s all thanks to a partnership between the school district, The Knight Foundation, and Cox Communications.

“I think the mission is just fantastic,” said Chris Howard, Cox Communications.

Now, that reach is expanding. The program is offering the low cost computers and laptops to every single family in four zip codes: 31201, 31204, 31206, and 31217. Cox is offering the discounted Internet for qualifying families in every school.

“Cox for a long time has been very dedicated to students and education and also technology and so this really was just the perfect vehicle to reach as many people as we can in the school system,” said Howard.

After hearing stories from students who say the program is really benefiting their school work, Robinson says expanding is just what Bibb County need.

“This program is a life changer, it’s a family changer, and it can empower this community,” said Robinson.
