Congressman Scott Says Falling Off “Fiscal Cliff” Won’t Destroy America

WASHINGTON, D.C. (41NBC/WMGT) – President Obama is pushing Republicans to vote now to extend tax rates for middle class Americans without addressing the rest of the fiscal cliff issues.

Congressman Austin Scott says the house won’t strike a deal until the president lays everything out on the table.

“With respect to the President’s supporters he has essentially only talked about the tax side of the equation and has refused to talk about the spending side and we’ve got to his spending proposal, we’ve got to see his whole proposal before we can even evaluate it. We certainly want to avoid the impacts of this but the country has certainly been through worse,” says Scott.

Scott says if we go off the fiscal cliff, America will bounce back.

“The idea of a cliff and if we don’t get to an agreement by December 31st and the sun’s not going to come up that’s simply not true,” says Scott.

He says his plan to avert the automatic spending cuts is to chop 1% across the board over a three year period. Scott says he hasn’t brought this plan to the floor.

Congressman Scott says he wants to hear what the president is proposing for spending cuts before he votes on any deal.
