Congressman Bishop: Social Security Doesn’t Need to Be Cut

WASHINGTON, D.C. (41NBC/WMGT) — Congressman Sanford Bishop says it would irresponsible for the President and Congress to allow America to fall off the fiscal cliff.

Yesterday, President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner met for the first time, one-on-one, behind closed doors.

Leaders on both sides are now showing signs of compromise. Republicans are agreeing to tax hikes on the rich, and Democrats are looking at spending cuts on medicare and social security.

Congressman Bishop says social security does not need to be on the chopping block.

“Social security benefits and the money in the social security trust fund, was paid by the potential beneficiaries were workers and that didn’t contribute to the debt and it should not be contributing to the elimination of the debt,” says Bishop.

Bishop says a compromise needs to come quickly because the debt ceiling is about to be reached. If that happens, our country’s credit rating would go down. That would mean higher interest rates on our current debt, something the U.S. can’t afford.
