Completion of Road Improvement Project in Macon

MACON, Georgia (41 NBC) – Macon and the Medical Center of Central Georgia celebrated the completion of the New and Pine Street intersection project with a ribbon cutting on Tuesday.

The work improved roads, sidewalks, and traffic flow along Pine Street in front of the hospital.

Before the road work, the area had broken pavement and a lack of handicapped ramps for patients entering the hospital.

Project Consultant Wimberly Treadwell talked with 41 NBC about the condition of the old area, and why these upgrades are so important.

“When we had the original press conference for this project, the Mayor and Jim Cole were helping wheelchairs get up the street,” Treadwell said. “This is just such an improvement and it’s such a wonderful urban improvement, it’s a beautification project as well as an enhanced safety project.”

The new area has crosswalks and pedestrian friendly concrete walkways and handicap ramps that are approved under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The entire project cost just over $1 million, and was funded by the Georgia Department of Transportation Enhancement Program, Penny Tax, and money from the Medical Center.
