Community Members Encouraged to Recycle Electronics for Good Cause

New tech gadgets get unveiled constantly leaving your old ones collecting dust. Now, there’s a way to get rid of them for free. The Macon Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore is now a hub for electronic recycling.

Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Harold Tessendorf says, “It cleans out a lot of stuff people have in their attics or businesses that they wish to recycle.”

The recycling program also gives back to Habitat’s mission. “There will be some proceeds that will comeback to us,” says Tessendorf.

Every old computer, TV, and even typewriter the Habitat for Humanity ReStore collects stays out of the landfill.

Georgia Habitat for Humanity ReStores are the first in the Southeast to roll out this type of program. Two drop-off locations are in Macon and Warner Robins.

According to ReStore Manager, Charlie Hebenstreit, community members are exited about the program. He says,  “They think it’s great. They’ve been filling up the landfill with their stuff and now they’ve got a place to take it.”

Tessendorf calls it guilt free recycling, “A lot of the stuff we are seeing is stuff that can no longer be refurbished anyway, and we’d prefer to keep that out of the landfill because of not only the space but because of the toxicity.”

Recycling the electronics is completely free. Tessendorf adds, “this is a great way to recycle, but to also help our local community.”
