Community leaders to cut ribbon on speed breakers inside Pendleton Homes
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The road to a safer neighborhood now comes with a few added bumps.
“Everybody would jump in two different lanes speeding and stuff,” said one resident Shikeymia Hudson.
The kind that’ll stop drivers from speeding through–or at least slow them down.
“High speed traffic and pedestrians are a deadly mix,” said Pedestrian Safety Review Board Chair Tom Ellington.
Residents in the Pendleton Homes neighborhood were happy to cut the ribbon on two brand new speed breakers.
“This is a roadway that’s primarily residential in character and where there had been a speeding problem. There are a lot of children in this community.”
Shikeymia Hudson says she sees children playing outside everyday while cars bolt through the neighborhood.
“A few cars just smash up out of here all day while children are on the road or on the side of the road,” she told 41NBC.
That’s including her own son.
“He likes to play a lot so, I try to keep him closer because I don’t want anything to happen,” she said.
Community leaders and residents celebrated the two newly installed speed bumps.
“I’m glad they put the speed bumps up,” Hudson added.
Adding the humps was the result of a Pedestrian Safety Review Board study on areas in Macon where drivers are heavily speeding.
“The bottom line is traffic is going to be slower along this stretch of roadway,” Ellington said.
They’re hoping it’ll make the neighborhood safer thanks to the concern of community members and officials alike.
“The people who could do something about it found the solution and have implemented it,” he continued.
Law enforcement, county officials and community leaders all gathered to watch earlier this afternoon.
The two speed bumps total costed $5000 to purchase and install. The money came from SPLOST dollars set aside to fund pedestrian safety projects.
