Community group wants residents to clean up trash in south Macon
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – One concerned group is asking residents in south Macon to clean up their neighborhood.
You name it, it’s on the streets.
“A lot of people have left from South Macon,” Anna Thompkins, one business owner, said.
There are bottles, bags and beer cans. It’s a growing problem along streets and sidewalks in south Macon.
One group has had enough. South Macon Arts Revitalization Technology, or SMART, is sponsoring a neighborhood clean up to pick up the junk.
Antonio Lewis-Ross is tired of the trend.
“What we’d like to say is south Macon is not a dumping area. We are a community and this today is the start today is us saying no,” Lewis-Ross said.
Volunteers are being asked to use five large dumpsters around the area to clean up and make the community more presentable.
“It takes churches, it takes the industries in this neighborhood, to actually make a change,” Lewis-Ross said.
It’s a chance to give the community something to take pride in.
“Giving them a place where they can and proud about, that’s the main thing. If you care, we care,” Rev. Charles Blackmon said.
Care — a word these concerned residents say they haven’t seen for some time on these streets.
“We want to tell people don’t run, it’s time to fight. If south Macon is where you live and reside, let’s make south Macon beautiful. Get involved, let’s get involved with what’s going on,” Thompkins said.
There’s a work assignment meeting on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at the Crisp Street Church of God in Christ at 348 Spike Street in Macon.
The neighborhood clean up is Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
