MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Community Foundation of Central Georgia is investing in communities across the region, awarding grants to more than 20 nonprofits to support education, health care, housing and the arts.

One of those organizations, Prevent Blindness Georgia, received $24,000 to help children get vision care directly in schools.

Jill Thornton, president of Prevent Blindness Georgia, says many children struggle in the classroom simply because they cannot see.

“Children who cannot see properly end up in learning disability classes, their self-esteem is taken from them, when really all they need is glasses and then they can read,” Thornton said.

The organization provides vision exams and helps children get glasses if they need them, making it easier for students to succeed without requiring parents to miss work.

Another nonprofit, BECentric Incorporated, also received funding. The organization plans to bring arts programming to Fort Valley, including a National Poetry Month festival.

Sharonda Richardson with BECentric says the arts can have a powerful impact on people and communities.

“The arts saved my life, and the arts made me a better person, made me more aware. So I just truly believe that art is the great bridge between cultures, food, and conversation,” Richardson said.

The Community Foundation says these grants are designed to create lasting impact across Middle Georgia.
